This summer, Alpert donated one of his cast bronze pieces, "The Musicians" to the GRAMMY Foundation for auction at their annual Starry Night Gala. The event - which this year honored Quincy Jones with the Foundation's Leadership Award - took place July 28 at UCLA's Straus Stadium. Alpert's "The Musicians" emerged as the item sold for the highest price at Starry Night's live auction with a final bid of $60,000." "It was a remarkable moment in the auction," said MusiCARES/GRAMMY Foundation's Kelly Burgos, "which was facilitated by our wonderful auctioneer, David Foster." Herb Alpert's long association with the Recording Academy includes eight GRAMMYs, among them the prestigious Salute To Industry Iconsª/President's Merit Award and the Trustees Award, received jointly with fellow A&M Records co-founder Jerry Moss in 2007 and 1997, respectively. Alpert's six GRAMMYs as an artist/producer began with a trio of honors for the 1965 Herb Alpert & Tijuana Brass hit "A Taste Of Honey," including Record of the Year. Most recently, as a solo artist, he received a Best Pop Instrumental Performance GRAMMY for the 1979 #1 Pop/#4 Black/#1 AC single "Rise." On May 29, the also chart-topping album Rise became the latest addition to Shout! Factory's Herb Alpert Signature Series, featuring remastered & expandedreissues of Alpert's entire catalogue, solo and with TJB. Alpert has been sculpting and painting for almost as long as he's been making music. Most recently, in 2006, "Spirit Totems: Herb Alpert Sculpture 1995-2005," presenting his monumental cast bronzes, was shown at the Pasadena Museum of California Art. In 2005, the Spirit Totems were on display for six weeks in a public exhibition at NYC's Bryant Square Park. Upcoming, his sculptures will be shown at Texas A&M University and at UCLA, where, in 2005, Alpert and Moss bequeathed "The A&M Collection," a wealth of A&M Records papers and artifacts, to the university library.
